Today INNOVEST ME, the growth hacking- business acceleration investment firm that empowers entrepreneurs during their startup stage and SMEs during their market expansion phase, awarded the winner of its “Logo Design Competition” Graphic designer, Ali Al Tahhan. The competition received more than 500 designs and engaged hundreds of participants from all across the Arab World. For the pre-launch of Ruwwad Al Iraq, the “Logo Design Competition” was launched to provide the youth sector a unique opportunity to take part in creating the incubation platform that aims to identify high potential entrepreneurs and startups in Iraq. This platform will empower start-up talents with the winning tools and resources needed to successfully launch in Iraq and eventually expand in the region and globally. Bassam Falah, Founder and Managing Director of INNOVEST ME alongside the Executive Management Team awarded the winner, Ali Al Tahhan the prize money cheque of $10,000 USD in Babylon Hotel, Baghdad. “Ruwwad Al Iraq aims to shed light on the crucial and valuable role of entrepreneurs and their ability to drive economies and to develop prosperous societies. In addition, we are confident that their skills will contribute to the national income through their entrepreneurial ventures, create new businesses and provide new employment opportunities. Entrepreneurs are a national asset that must be cultivated, trained and incubated as they are the main vehicle to move an economy forward,” said Bassam Falah. Bassam Falah further added: “Our aim is to build communities of innovators in various sectors, to create new partnerships, to solidify individual and collective efforts, to achieve local, regional and global prosperity and to provide sustainable development to the people and the community thus fulfilling their aspirations for a more stable, secure and dignified life.” Duaa Adnan, Marketing Manager of Ruwwad Al Iraq, praised the design of the winning logo that was selected by the distinguished panel of judges, comprised of business leaders in Marketing and Communications from Iraq and the Middle East. The logo design was selected based on specific eligibility criteria such as creativity, design craftsmanship, distinctiveness, simplicity, equity and most importantly its embodiment of the entrepreneurship spirit and Iraqi culture. It's important to note that Ruwwad Al Iraq is a platform that will provide entrepreneurs in Iraq the opportunity to start or scale up their business and will compete in three main categories, the “Startup Idea” stage, “Scale Up” stage and “Socialpreneurship” stage. The winning finalists will be awarded more than $100,000 in financial, in-kind and capacity-building prizes.

On May 28, 2021, INTILAQ Winners “a program that is financed by the Iraqi German Cooperation BMZ,” and implemented by our Ecosystem Partner GIZ – PSD Team “Private Sector Development and Employment Promotion Project,” have successfully received a virtual training under the title of "Investment Readiness."

Today, the launching of the Iraqpreneurs platform was announced in the presence of representatives of INNOVEST Middle East, the World Bank, and the Iraqi Media Network as well as the founding partners- Central Bank of Iraq, Zain Iraq, and Iraq Private Banks League. Iraqpreneurs is the first initiative of its kind that aims at helping young entrepreneurs and startups across Iraq to achieve their dreams and develop their own projects. Iraqpreneurs is a competition platform that invites participants to submit their innovative ideas or startup business plans in a bid for financial and in-kind prizes that will contribute in bringing their dreams to life. The launching of this platform took place during a press conference held at Babel Hotel in the capital of Iraq, Baghdad. The inauguration speech was given by Mr. Ali Al Hilly, Entrepreneurship Consultant at Zain Iraq, who introduced the platform’s objectives, key stakeholders, and stages and explained how to participate in the platform competition. Al-Hilly gave the floor to Dr. Ali Mohsen Ismail, Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq and Head of the Board of Directors of the Tamkeen Fund, who emphasized on the important role entrepreneurs play in boosting the economy of Iraq. He added that “supporting the Tamkeen Fund by giving away grand prizes on the Iraqpreneurs platform is part of supporting youth initiatives and innovations, which are deemed the future of the Iraqi economy.” He also thanked everyone who contributed to the Tamkeen Fund from private Iraqi banks and other financial institutions enabling the fund’s successive initiatives to support multiple activities benefiting large segments of society. Mr. Mujahid Abu Al-Hill, Head of the Iraqi Media Network, spoke of the national responsibility that lies on the media to support entrepreneurs and shed light on their innovations and projects. “The media constitute an essential part of economic reform and development, because of their power in forming public consensus. Our network supports this platform because it encourages people in developing countries to become more competent and conscientious about job and investment opportunities as well as trade opportunities,” he added. Ali Al-Zahid, Chief Executive Officer of Zain Iraq, stressed on the important role the private sector plays in supporting and promoting young talents and startups. “We congratulate all the organizers of this project on launching the Iraqpreneurs platform that will foster young Iraqi innovators,” continued Al-Zahid. “We, at Zain Iraq, have long been supporting and empowering youth in various fields, including entrepreneurs and startups, to develop their projects and gain as well as exchange expertise in the field of technology and information technology and communication. We believe that future development in Iraq and the region will be led by young innovators in the field of technology. Hence, we are always seeking to build awareness and promote opportunities that reinforce creative talents by contributing to shaping future entrepreneurs,” he added. In turn, Ms. Yara Salem, Special Representative of the World Bank’s mission in Iraq, asserted that the Iraqpreneurs initiative is at the core of the World Bank’s main objectives, which focus on creating more job opportunities for the youth and giving them the chance to play an important role in the process of construction, development and establishment of peace and stability. This could promote economic, social and personal development in Iraq. Ms. Salem also added that “Iraqpreneurs provides young people with a chance to address their problems, priorities and ideas in order to overcome the impasse of unemployment and the lack of job opportunities and capacities, and actively participate in a creative and innovative way in developing social solutions in different fields including education, health, water, among others including technology-use solutions. Therefore, this initiative is characterized by building the foundations of community participation among the youth in the process of reconstruction and the rebuilding of the Iraq of tomorrow.” For his part, Mr. Wadih Nouri Al-Hanzal, Head of the Iraq Private Banks League, emphasized on the importance of the role banks play in supporting innovators and startups and added “we are working to provide startups with funding and soft loans through the banking sector and also contribute in providing them with the necessary training to launch and develop their own projects.” Then Mr. Bassam Falah, Founder and CEO of INNOVEST ME, took the floor and commended the role played by the founding partners who supported the birth and establishment of the Iraqpreneurs project, and stressed on the importance of the collaboration between the public and private sectors in building State economies and developing societies. “We are proud to take part of this national initiative, which would move the Iraqi economy forward,” said Mr. Falah.

Today, Ruwwad Al Iraq Awards Ceremony and Iftar was held at Babylon Rotana Hotel – Baghdad in the presence of organizers of the platform: INNOVEST Middle East, the World Bank, and the Iraqi Media Network (IMN) as well as the Founding Partners: Central Bank of Iraq, Zain Iraq, and Iraq Private Banks League. The attendees of the Ceremony also included Dr. Mahdi Al-Alaq, Counsellor of Prime Minister and Dr Ali Al-Alaq, Governor of the Central Bank of Iraq, as well as VIPs and representatives of other supporting companies. The event was organized to honor the finalists of Ruwwad Al Iraq Competition and to let them compete on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd ranks in each category; “Socialpreneur”, “Idea Stage” and “Scale-up Stage” by presenting their startups to a judging panel formed of 5 judges; Ms. Yarah Salem - World Bank Country Manager in Iraq, Ms. Dawsar Al Charchafchi – March Holding Board Member, Mr. Nour el Handhal Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ashur Bank, Mr. Waled Eidy – Senior Advisor to the Central Bank of Iraq and, Mr. Ali Al Zahid – CEO of Zain Iraq. The jury followed a set of criteria on which participants were evaluated. These criteria were shared in advance on social networking sites, which circulated around finance, competition, team, market need, timing…Etc. It is important to note that Ruwwad Al Iraq Platform was launched last year on September 13th, 2018 and it was the first initiative of its kind that aims at helping young entrepreneurs and start-up owners across Iraq to achieve their goals and develop their own projects by offering them in-kind support and cash worth more than 100,000 USD that could turn their dreams into reality. Since the launch of Ruwwad Al Iraq platform, more than 3000 applicants registered their ideas/projects on platform’s website. The number was reduced later as the competition proceeded to 200 qualifiers in round 2, and then 30 qualifiers in round 3 (10 participants from each category), till reaching 9 winners (3 participants from each category) in the final round who competed on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd ranks during the Awards Ceremony. On span of 9 months, the platform attracted more than 100,000 followers on social media, and more than 11,000 contacts through university activations. Moreover, the platform offered 4,400 e-learning courses to its qualifiers and issued more than 2,200 e-certificated. At the end of the Ceremony, winners were announced to receive their prizes and awards on stage as follows: Winners of “Socialpreneur” Category: 1st Place Smart Container for Alhasan Yaser AbdulRazzaq $10,000USD 2nd Place Asdikaee Magazine for Fawaz Al-Saffar $5,000USD 3rd Place Ikfal Nakhla for Labib Kashif Al-Getta $2,500USD A brief about each project: • Smart Container is a new concept that connects technology and environment in Iraq to reduce pollution and effort through a smart system on electronic devices that allows monitoring the status of the Smart containers deployed in different regions in Iraq by receiving alerts sent by the container when full to discharge, recycle and then landfill. • Asdikaee is a Comics Magazine that uses Iraqi characters in an attractive and influential way to be close to Iraqi children and to influence them so they can apply the ideas they learn in their daily life. Each issue contains different subjects in culture, knowledge, creativity and skills. Asdikaee Magazine’s aims at creating a cultural product for Iraqi kids in various media, read, audio and video. • Ikfil Nakhla is an Entrepreneurial project that aims at making Iraq greener and richer with palm trees and to fill the need of Iraqi market with dates instead of importing them. Ikfil Nakhla’s goal is to return Iraq to the state where it was number one producer of dates around the globe and now it is the first project in Iraq to provide integrated palm care services from pruning to harvesting, as well as periodic inspection, disease detection and treatment using modern integrated methods. Winners of “Idea Stage” Category: 1st Place Garages App for Mohammed AbdulElah $10,000USD 2nd Place Plant Tissue Culture for Layth Hamdi Al-Talib $5,000USD 3rd Place E-Capsule for Mohammed Hilal Alshikly $2,500USD A brief about each project: • Garages App is designed to facilitate the process of finding a parking at a lower cost as it works to collect available parking lots around Baghdad and hopefully Iraq in the future. The application offers the availability of parking spaces dealing with the application to the user in a simple search mode, through which all the parking lots close to the vehicle are shared within the application in addition to the services provided by each park at a lower cost. • Plant Tissue Culture aims at producing seedlings of vegetables and plants by the technique of textile agriculture, which is one of the modern technologies of agricultural production that produces a large amount of agricultural products within a short period of time with high quality specifications and free from any illness because it takes place in sterile conditions. Thus, it will fill the need of the local market rather than importing. • E-Capsule is an Electronic platform (web and mobile application) used by professionals in the medical sector (pharmacists, doctors...Etc.) in which the purchase of drugs happens electronically before running out of stock. Furthermore, the medical professional can buy drugs at the lowest price found on the application compared to other distributers. An integrated sales program would also be offered. The main benefit of this application is reflected in the ability to sell large quantities of drugs through funded advertisements sent as immediate notifications to the pharmacists in the areas specified by owners of the drug stores. Winners of “Scale-Up Stage” Category: 1st Place Alsaree3 for Ahmed Sobhi $20,000USD 2nd Place 6262 for Mohammed Maher Hassan $10,000USD 3rd Place Dakakenna for Yousif Al Neamy $5,000USD A brief about each project: • AlSaree3 is an online application operating 24/7 in Baghdad that facilitates the process of ordering and delivering food to customers from the most important, famous and diverse restaurants. Alsaree3’s current goal is to expand to other provinces and keep developing using technology to become the fastest at delivering food in Iraq. • 6262 is a service that provides phone numbers and addresses of all commercial establishments, health institutions... Etc. All that by dialing 6262 “Iraqi guide service” that possesses an exclusive database collected within 2 years by a team consisting of more than 177 Iraqi. Also, 6262 links between global and local markets where it facilitates the connection between foreign companies, factories, & traders and companies within Iraq. • Dakakenna is an E-Commerce platform that enables consumers to buy products from authorized suppliers in a convenient and fast way. It is the first tech-startup operating in Mosul since August 2018. Dakakenna deals with main suppliers to ensure best prices, fast shipping and reliable insurance (warranty) on sold products. Through its platform, Dakakenna is selling over 5 thousand items and has secured more than 15 thousand items to be listed on its application in the upcoming few months. As a generous encouraging gest, Governor of the Central Bank “Dr. Ali Al-Alaq” surprised the participants with an additional support award worth 6 million IQD offered to each of the 9 winners.

As the COVID-19 continues its disruption, the livelihood of many entrepreneurs and small business owners has been threatened. Our current situation is deeply unsettling. Entrepreneurs are facing many obstacles, including ensuring the businesses they have put their blood, sweat, and tears into continue to stay afloat. On top of that, many of them have employees that they’re trying to protect and reassure—a monumental task when they themselves are struggling with burnout.

From hundreds of discussions with entrepreneurs, business owners, and regional leaders, we’ve been able to pinpoint five main worries entrepreneurs are dealing with during the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Taking action and moving forward

A crisis like the one we’re currently experiencing requires quick thinking in the face of uncertainty. However, with such high stakes on the line, entrepreneurs find themselves dealing with “analysis paralysis,” or the inability to make a decision due to overthinking.

Delaying decisions will only lead to more challenges—and those challenges will require more decisions. However, decisions are never final for the simple fact that change is never absolute.”

Break down what you need to do into smaller steps and then attend to issues based on their level of urgency. Once you start taking proactive measures, you’ll feel more in control and more confident in your ability to navigate oncoming trials and tribulations.

2. Keeping up with legislation

The business landscape is changing at a rapid pace. It seems like the government releases new regulations that affect business owners almost every day.

In order to understand and follow new legislation and changes, business owners will need to monitor news from the government on regular basis. Most importantly, make sure you’re getting your information from an official source, such as a government website, a bank representative, accountant, or other professionals in your network.

3. Finding balance and achieving a healthy mindset

Fear. Anxiety. Hopelessness. We’re all experiencing a lot of intense emotions during these ever-evolving times, and entrepreneurs are no exception. To make it worse, there’s an additional level of stress as they try to do their best for their employees and customers.

It can help to remember the saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” Overextending yourself leads to burnout, and once you reach that state you won’t be able to help anyone. That’s why it’s imperative that entrepreneurs carve out time to recharge and take care of themselves.

It can be hard to break away from work right now. Be intentional by setting a block of time in your schedule for self-care—whether that be going for a walk or spending time with your family. The more you’re able to find inner calm during this crisis, the better able you are to make decisions and lead your business.

4. Dealing with information overload

It seems like every minute we’re inundated with a relentless flood of information about COVID-19. While having access to the latest news is undoubtedly a blessing, it can also be a burden. Information overload is a very real thing that occurs when there is too much relevant information being disseminated at the same time.

When there’s an information surplus, we tend to miss out on important news or even succumb to potentially harmful misinformation.

In order to make sense of all the conflicting information out there, entrepreneurs need to take a moment to step back and evaluate whether the information they’re reading is fact-checked and from a reliable source.

It’s also good to set a limit for yourself. Continuously exposing yourself to upsetting news will only heighten anxiety. Make it a point to check for updates regularly, but as soon as you start feeling overwhelmed, take a break.

5. Selecting the right focus

Business owners are dealing with a million concerns right now and it’s difficult to know where to prioritize time and resources.

One way to choose is to consider what is truly important to your business. For most of us, that’s our people—employees, customers, vendors, partners.

Your first priority should be the safety and well-being of your employees. Up next would be communicating with customers. They may not be in a position to patronize your business, but they still want to be updated on any changes to its operations. The same goes for other stakeholders so they know what your status is and what to expect moving forward.

Next, break down what you need to do into smaller steps and prioritize them by how urgent they are. Don’t forget to give yourself credit for doing your best right now.

The scale of this crisis is unprecedented, but there is a silver lining. Eventually, we will come out on the other side of this pandemic with a greater sense of personal empowerment and increased connection to our community—all of which will be advantages for our businesses in the future.

RAI season II continues with its steady growth and unremitting drive for excellence. Thanks to the support of partners like GIZ "Private Sector Development & Employment Promotion Project", it demonstrates the power that genuine collaborations and partnerships hold to significantly elevate our participants’ careers, and, ultimately, our country, and beyond.

We are delighted to inform you that we have announced the 9 winners “Al Faezoun” on November 23rd, who are qualified for the Final Stage of Ruwwad Al Iraq Season II.

On Friday Nov. 20th, Top 30 entrepreneurs “Al Nukhba”, who were qualified to attend the Virtual Boot-camp, pitched their ideas to a judging panel based on their categories.

Jury members were representatives of GIZ-PSD, HR Works, Innovest ME, Zain Iraq & 51Labs.

Winners will be invited to attend a Virtual Awards Ceremony to compete through presenting their startups in the last round for which 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prizes will be awarded for each category “Idea Track, Scale-up Track, & Socialpreneurship Track”
